As you all know today is Human Rights Day.
Human Rights Day marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UNDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly on the 10th of December 1948.
This was the first global commitment of its kind, calling for the universal protection of our fundamental human rights.
Human Rights Day, in this sense, can be viewed as a day of celebration, recognising this great landmark in human rights history.
Of course, while we celebrate this landmark, we should also be sure to recognise contemporary violations of human rights. Only through the recognition of these violations can we develop and implement plans to improve the way we live in this world. We still have much to do before we can truly celebrate Human Rights Day.
I encourage you to get familiar with the UNDHR if you aren’t already. These videos are great: http://www.youthforhumanrights.org/watchads/index.html
I also encourage you to read the United Nations press releases: http://www.ohchr.org/EN/AboutUs/Pages/HumanRightsDay2009.aspx
Let us work together so that one day all the people of the world can truly celebrate Human Rights Day.
